Equipment Essentials for Shooting Jewelry on Models

Before we start shooting jewelry on models, having the right equipment is key. Especially since you’ll want to capture every intricate detail to create images that stand out.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

Cameras

A high-resolution camera is your best friend when it comes to jewelry photography. The goal is to capture the fine details of the jewelry while keeping the overall image sharp. DSLR and mirrorless cameras are popular choices, with models like the Canon EOS R5 and Sony A7R IV offering excellent resolution and dynamic range.

Lenses

Macro lenses are an important tool for jewelry photography as they allow you to get close to the subject, capturing fine details that standard lenses might miss. Look for lenses with a focal length between 85mm and 105mm, like the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro or the Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED. These lenses provide the flexibility to shoot tight close-ups while maintaining a natural perspective. For more information on lenses for jewelry photography, click here.

Tripods

Stability is a must when shooting jewelry, especially during close-ups. A sturdy tripod ensures your camera remains steady, allowing you to focus on the details without worrying about camera shake. Tripods with adjustable heads, like the Manfrotto Befree Advanced, offer flexibility in positioning your camera at different angles, helping you find the perfect shot.

Lighting

Proper lighting is a must for your jewelry photos. Lightboxes are a great option for evenly distributing light around your subject, reducing harsh shadows and highlighting the jewelry’s sparkle. LED ring lights, like the Neewer Ring Light Kit, provide consistent, adjustable lighting, perfect for illuminating the model and the jewelry without creating glare or reflections. Adding reflectors and diffusers to your setup can help soften the light and bring out the jewelry’s true colors and textures.

Now let’s look at how to set up your shoot and create an environment that allows the jewelry to shine and your model to complement the piece beautifully.

Setting Up Your Shoot

Creating the right environment is just as important as having the right equipment. A well-planned setup will help you showcase the jewelry’s details while ensuring that the model looks natural and comfortable.

Studio vs. Location

Choosing between a studio and an on-location shoot depends on the mood and style you want to achieve. A studio offers complete control over lighting and background, which is ideal for a clean, professional look. If you’re aiming for a more lifestyle-oriented vibe, shooting on location can add context and tell a story that resonates with your audience.

Backgrounds

The background plays an important role in jewelry photography. It should be simple enough to keep the focus on the jewelry but complement the piece and the model. Neutral tones like whites, grays, and blacks are safe bets, but don’t be afraid to experiment with textures and colors that enhance the jewelry’s appeal. For example, a soft, fabric backdrop can add a touch of luxury, while a wooden surface might give a more rustic feel.

Lighting Techniques

Lighting is everything in jewelry photography. For a studio shoot, start with soft, diffused light to avoid harsh shadows. Lightboxes are excellent for creating even lighting around the jewelry. If you’re shooting on location, natural light can work wonders, but make sure it’s not too harsh. Early morning or late afternoon, known as the golden hour, offers the most flattering natural light.

For more information on lighting techniques for jewelry photography, click here.

Using Reflectors and Diffusers

Reflectors and diffusers are your best friends when it comes to controlling light. A reflector bounces light back onto the jewelry, filling in shadows and adding brightness. Diffusers, on the other hand, soften the light, reducing glare and helping to highlight the jewelry’s details. Use them together to achieve a balanced, well-lit image.

Now let’s talk about how to work with models to ensure the jewelry takes center stage in every shot.

Working with Models on Photography Shoots

Photographing jewelry on models requires a delicate balance between showcasing the jewelry and ensuring the model looks natural and elegant.

Here’s how to achieve that balance:

Model Selection

Choosing the right model is the first step in creating compelling jewelry images. The model should match the brand’s aesthetic and have features that complement the jewelry. For example, if you’re shooting bold, statement pieces, a model with strong, defined features might be ideal, whereas delicate jewelry may suit a model with softer, more refined features.

Styling the Model and Jewelry

Styling is key to ensuring the jewelry remains the focus. Keep the model’s wardrobe and makeup simple and in harmony with the jewelry. Neutral tones and understated makeup work well, allowing the jewelry to stand out without competing for attention. Hairstyles should be neat and pulled back if needed, to avoid covering the jewelry.

Posing Techniques

Directing models to pose in ways that highlight the jewelry is extremely important. Encourage natural, relaxed poses that position the jewelry as the centerpiece of the image. For example, if photographing a necklace, a slightly turned head with the neck elongated can create an elegant line that draws attention to the piece. Hands should be posed in a way that complements rings and bracelets without appearing stiff or awkward.

Capturing Natural Poses

To achieve authentic, natural poses, communicate clearly with the model and create a comfortable environment. A good trick is to have the model move naturally between poses, capturing those in-between moments where they aren’t consciously posing. These shots often yield the most genuine and appealing images, with the jewelry catching the light just right.

Where To Find Models For Jewelry Photoshoots

Depending on the level of your photoshoot, models may be found several ways:

Model Agencies:

One of the easiest ways to hire a model is through a licensed modeling agency. (Make sure they are licensed!) This will definitely not be an inexpensive option, but if you are selling high end jewelry, it is the best method to get a model who will not only match your needs but also be trained for photo modeling.

Instagram:

While there are plenty of modeling websites that list models, the easiest method to find models online is to look on Instagram. Search hashtag #(yourstate)model, #hiremodel or even #modelforhire. You will find there are plenty of models around and their fees are usually reasonable. Be sure to tell them the type of shoot you are doing and how the images will be used in case usage changes their rates. Generally these models won’t charge you a licensing fee beyond the shoot.

Friends and Family:

While not always comfortable in photos, you may want to try incorporating friends and family to help you. This may take a bit more shoot time to get the images you want, but make it fun for them and they will relax into the role of jewelry model!

Shooting Techniques

Capturing jewelry on models requires a combination of technical skill and creative vision. Here’s how to make sure your shots highlight the jewelry’s best features:

Focus Techniques

Achieving sharp focus on the jewelry is essential. Use a narrow aperture (around f/8 to f/16) to ensure the entire piece is in focus, especially when shooting close-ups. Employ manual focus if necessary, to pinpoint the exact details you want to emphasize.

Angles and Composition

Experimenting with different angles can reveal the jewelry’s unique characteristics. For necklaces, a straight-on shot might work, while rings often benefit from a slight tilt to catch the light on the gem. Consider the rule of thirds to place the jewelry in a visually appealing position within the frame. Close-ups are ideal for capturing intricate details, but don’t forget to also shoot wider shots that show how the jewelry complements the model.

Creating Sparkle

To make jewelry sparkle, consider using a small, focused light source aimed directly at the gem or metal surface. This technique can create highlights that bring out the jewelry’s brilliance. Additionally, slight movements or changes in the angle of the light can reveal different facets and textures, making the piece look even more dynamic.

Post-Processing Tips

Post-processing is where you can refine and enhance your jewelry images to make them truly stand out.

Here are some tips to get the most out of your photos:

Basic Retouching

Start with color correction to ensure the jewelry’s true colors are accurately represented. Adjust the brightness and contrast to bring out the details, and fine-tune the exposure if needed. Be cautious with these adjustments, aiming to enhance rather than alter the jewelry’s appearance.

Avoiding Over-Editing

It’s easy to go overboard with editing, but less is often more when it comes to jewelry photography. Keep the retouching subtle to avoid making the jewelry look unnatural. Focus on eliminating distractions like dust or small imperfections without losing the authenticity of the piece.

Advanced Editing

For more intricate edits, you can use selective sharpening techniques to draw attention to the most detailed areas of the jewelry, like a gemstone’s facets or intricate engravings.

Next we’ll explore real-life case studies that demonstrate the techniques discussed in this article, providing you with practical examples of how to apply these methods in your own work.

Jewelry Photography Case Study

To put the techniques we’ve discussed into practice, let’s look at a real-world example that illustrates the process. (These images were displayed above, you may click on the links below if you wish to go back and look at them.)

Case Study 1: Capturing a Statement Necklace

In this shoot, the goal was to highlight a bold statement necklace on a model. The setup involved using a softbox to create even lighting, with a reflector to bounce light back onto the jewelry, ensuring it sparkled without harsh shadows. The model was styled with a simple, off-the-shoulder top to keep the focus on the necklace. During the shoot, various angles were tried to find the one that best captured the piece’s intricate design. In post-processing, retouching was needed, mainly to adjust the color balance and remove some stray hairs plus any minor distractions. Click to See.

Case Study 2: Photographing a Delicate Ring

For this project, the focus was on a dainty ring with intricate details. A macro lens was used to capture the fine craftsmanship up close, and a tripod ensured stability during the shoot. The model’s hand was posed gracefully to show off the ring while maintaining a natural look. Lighting was carefully controlled using diffusers to soften shadows and bring out the ring’s shine. Post-processing involved sharpening throughout the entire ring, along with minor adjustments to enhance the ring’s sparkle and clarity.

These case studies demonstrate how thoughtful planning, proper techniques, and careful post-processing can result in stunning jewelry images that captivate viewers. Click to See.

Common Challenges and Solutions

Photographing jewelry on models presents several unique challenges, but with the right techniques, these can be effectively managed. Here’s how to tackle some of the most common issues:

Dealing with Reflections

Jewelry, especially metals and gemstones, is highly reflective, which can lead to unwanted glare and reflections. To minimize this, use diffused lighting and position your lights at an angle where reflections are less likely to bounce directly into the camera lens. If reflections are still an issue, try adjusting the model’s position or using a polarizing filter to reduce glare.

Photographing Dainty Jewelry

Small, delicate pieces can be tricky to photograph because they require precise focus and lighting. A macro lens is essential for capturing the fine details of dainty jewelry. Consider using a ring light or small softbox to create even lighting without overpowering the piece. Patience is key; take your time to adjust the focus and composition to ensure the jewelry is sharply defined.

Shooting in Different Light Conditions

Whether you’re shooting indoors or outdoors, adapting to different lighting conditions is vital. For indoor shoots, control the light with softboxes, reflectors, and diffusers to create a consistent look. Outdoor shoots can offer beautiful natural light, but be mindful of the time of day; shooting during the golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) can provide soft, flattering light that enhances both the jewelry and the model.

With these challenges addressed, you’re ready to create stunning jewelry photography that stands out.

Jewelry photography is one of my favorite forms of product photography. Using these tips and techniques will help you create images that highlight the beauty of both the jewelry and the model, driving engagement and boosting sales.

Why Use Models in Product Photography

Using models in product photography adds more than just a face to a picture. It gives your audience context, emotion, and a reason to connect with your brand. People naturally respond to other people, so when a potential customer sees someone using your product, they can imagine themselves doing the same.

Model photography also helps communicate size, fit, and lifestyle in ways that a simple product shot on a white background cannot. This is especially important for fashion, beauty, accessories, and home goods. Even for food and beverages, a model can bring warmth and authenticity to the image, turning a static product into a story.

For e-commerce brands, this connection directly influences sales. Research shows that shoppers are more likely to click and purchase when a product photo shows a model in a realistic, aspirational setting. It builds trust and positions your brand as relatable and professional.

Key benefits of using models include:

Showing scale and proportion clearly

Creating an emotional connection with your audience

Demonstrating how the product fits into a lifestyle

Increasing engagement on social media and ads

Building brand credibility and trust

When done well, product photography with models does more than showcase an item. It becomes a powerful marketing tool that strengthens your brand and drives revenue.

How to Find and Hire the Right Models

Finding the right model for your product shoot is about more than looks. The best models represent your brand’s personality, connect with your audience, and make the shoot run smoothly. A poor fit can lead to wasted time, awkward images, and additional costs.

Here are the most effective ways to find models for your brand:

1. Work With Professional Modeling Agencies

Agencies provide trained models who understand posing, expressions, and the flow of a professional shoot.

Pros: Reliable, experienced, easy to book, access to a range of talent.

Cons: Higher cost, limited flexibility with scheduling.

Best for: Fashion brands, luxury products, and campaigns that require high-end results.

When working with an agency, be clear about your expectations. Share details like the product type, target audience, preferred look, and required usage rights before booking.

2. Book Freelance Models

Freelance models are independent professionals you can hire directly through platforms like Instagram, Model Mayhem, or local Facebook groups.

Pros: Lower cost, direct communication, flexible scheduling.

Cons: Skill level varies, more responsibility on you to vet talent and handle contracts.

Best for: Smaller brands or test shoots with limited budgets.

Before booking, always request a portfolio and read reviews or recommendations to ensure quality and professionalism.

3. Leverage Your Network

Sometimes the perfect model is closer than you think. Employees, friends, or loyal customers can step in as authentic brand representatives.

Pros: Highly relatable, authentic connection with the brand, budget-friendly.

Cons: May lack experience, need more direction during the shoot.

Best for: Lifestyle photography, local campaigns, or brands that value a personal touch.

This approach works especially well for social media content, where audiences value authenticity over perfection.

4. Consider Casting Calls

For larger campaigns, hosting a casting call allows you to see multiple candidates at once and find the perfect match.

Prepare by creating a clear brief with your requirements.

Include product information, desired demographics, and the mood or tone of the shoot.

Be prepared to take quick test shots to evaluate how each model works on camera.

Qualities to Look for in a Model

Regardless of where you find your talent, focus on these key traits:

Professionalism: Shows up on time and takes direction well.

Versatility: Can adapt to different poses and expressions.

Comfort with the product: Especially important for beauty, food, or beverage shoots.

Energy and expression: Brings life to the images rather than looking stiff or forced.

Tip: Match the Model to Your Audience

Your model should resonate with your target market. If you sell to young professionals, choose models who reflect that group’s style and values. This creates instant relatability and strengthens your brand message.

Understanding Costs and Budgeting for a Shoot

Budgeting for product photography with models involves more than just the photographer’s fee. There are multiple moving parts, and knowing what to expect upfront helps prevent surprises and ensures a smooth process. A well-planned budget allows you to create high-quality images while getting the most value for your investment.

1. Model Rates

Model fees vary based on experience, usage rights, and location.

Beginner or local models: $50–$100 per hour

Experienced freelance models: $100–$250 per hour

Agency-represented professionals: $250–$500+ per hour

Most models have minimum booking times, often two or three hours. For full-day shoots, day rates are typically offered at a discounted rate compared to hourly bookings.

2. Usage Rights and Licensing

Usage rights determine where and how you can use the images. Limited rights cost less but may not cover all your marketing needs.

Common options include:

Digital-only rights: For websites, social media, and online ads.

Print and digital rights: Includes catalogs, magazines, and packaging.

Exclusive rights: Reserved for brands that don’t want the model working with competitors.

Some licenses are time-limited, meaning you can only use the images for a set period, such as six months or one year. Once that period ends, you’ll need to renew the license to continue using the images legally. This is especially common with professional agency models and high-profile campaigns.

Always clarify usage rights and time limits before booking to avoid legal complications later. Both you and the model should sign agreements outlining these terms.

3. Hair, Makeup, and Styling

Professional grooming is essential for polished, high-end images.

Hair and makeup artist: $75–$150 per hour or $300–$600 per day.

Wardrobe stylist: $300–$800 per day depending on experience and sourcing needs.

Even small details like chipped nails or uneven skin tones can distract from the product.

Investing in a styling team ensures your shoot meets professional standards.

4. Studio, Location, and Equipment Costs

Depending on your concept, you may need to budget for:

Studio rental: $50–$200 per hour, depending on size and amenities.

Location fees: Permits or venue rentals, especially for outdoor or public settings.

Props and backgrounds: Varies widely, but even simple setups can add up.

Your photographer may provide some of these elements as part of their service, so discuss this during planning.

5. Photographer Fees

Professional photographers usually price projects based on:

Time spent shooting

Number of final images delivered

Level of creative direction required

Licensing and usage terms

For shoots with models, rates are typically higher than standard product photography because of the added complexity and planning involved.

6. Building a Realistic Budget

When budgeting, include every step of the process:

Photographer

Models

Styling team

Location or studio

Props and wardrobe

Post-production editing

Licensing fees

As a general guideline, model shoots often range from $2,000 to $10,000+, depending on the scale of the project, number of images and the brand’s goals.

Budget-Saving Tips

Combine multiple products in one shoot to maximize your investment.

Hire models for half-day sessions instead of full-day when possible.

Use freelance talent when agency-level models aren’t required.

Plan ahead to avoid last-minute bookings, which usually cost more.

Hair, Makeup, and Styling Essentials

Even the best product and model can fall flat if the styling is off. Professional hair, makeup, and wardrobe preparation ensure your images look polished and consistent with your brand’s identity. These details may seem small, but they have a huge impact on how customers perceive your products.

Why Styling Matters

High-resolution product photography captures every detail, including imperfections. Uneven skin tones, flyaway hairs, chipped nail polish, or wrinkled clothing can distract from the product and make the entire image look less professional.

When shoppers see a flawless, well-prepared image, they subconsciously associate that level of quality with your brand. I can’t stress enough how important styling is to product photography.

Hiring the Right Team

Hair and Makeup Artists (HMU): Essential for beauty, fashion, jewelry, and lifestyle shoots. They handle skin preparation, touch-ups, and styling adjustments throughout the shoot.

Wardrobe Stylists: Ensure clothing fits properly, matches the brand’s aesthetic, and complements the products being showcased.

Manicurists: For shoots featuring hands, nails must be clean, shaped, and polished. Yes, this applies to male models too — natural, clean nails photograph best.

Timing and Prep

Schedule your hair and makeup team to arrive before the photographer sets up. This prevents delays and gives models time to get camera-ready.

Encourage models to arrive with clean, makeup-free skin and unstyled hair.

For wardrobe, steam or press all clothing in advance to avoid last-minute fixes.

Budget Considerations

Professional styling adds to your overall shoot costs, but it’s worth the investment:

Hair and makeup artist: $200–$250 per hour or $750–$1000 per day.

Wardrobe stylist: $300–$800 per day depending on the scope of work.

Manicurist: Often included in HMU fees, or $50–$100 for focused prep.

Cutting corners here often leads to more expensive post-production retouching and less authentic-looking results.

Pro Tip: Build a Trusted Team

Once you find reliable stylists, keep working with them on future shoots. A consistent team will better understand your brand’s look, creating faster, smoother sessions and more cohesive imagery.

Legal Considerations and Model Releases

Every shoot involving models requires clear legal agreements to protect both your brand and the people featured in your images. Without proper documentation, you risk fines, takedown requests, or even lawsuits that can disrupt your marketing campaigns.

The most important piece of this legal puzzle is the model release.

What Is a Model Release?

A model release is a signed agreement that gives you permission to use a model’s image for marketing purposes. It outlines exactly how, where, and for how long the images can be used.

Without a signed release, you legally cannot use a model’s likeness in advertising, on social media, or in print materials. Even if you paid the model for their time, you still need this written consent.

Key Details a Model Release Should Cover

When creating or reviewing a release, make sure it includes:

Full names and contact information of both the model and the brand.

Specific usage rights, including whether images are for digital, print, or both.

Time limitations, if the license is only valid for a certain period.

Exclusivity clauses, if you require the model to avoid working with competing brands.

Compensation details, outlining what the model was paid or exchanged for their participation.

Signatures and dates from all involved parties.

Usage Rights vs. Copyright

It’s important to understand the difference between model usage rights and photographer copyright:

The model release gives you permission to use the person’s likeness.

The photographer’s agreement covers ownership and licensing of the images themselves.

You need both to be fully protected. A model release alone doesn’t give you the right to use the actual photo without a license from the photographer.

When to Get a Release Signed

Always have your release signed before the shoot begins. This avoids confusion or disputes later. Many professional photographers and agencies have standard release templates, but they can also be customized for your brand’s unique needs.

Minors and Parental Consent

If your shoot involves models under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign the release. Without this, the images cannot legally be used for marketing.

Additional Legal Considerations

Trademarks and logos: If clothing or props include visible brand logos, you may need permission to use them in your photos.

Location releases: For shoots in public or private spaces, check whether you need a permit or signed agreement from the location owner.

Insurance: Consider production insurance to cover accidents, damaged equipment, or cancellations.

Best Practices for Shooting With Models

A successful product shoot with models relies on more than great lighting and equipment. The way you plan, communicate, and manage the session directly impacts the quality of your final images. Following these best practices ensures a stress-free shoot that produces results you can use across all your marketing channels.

1. Start With a Clear Creative Brief

A detailed brief helps everyone involved understand the vision for the shoot. Include:

Product details and key features to highlight

Target audience and brand style guidelines

Mood boards or sample images for inspiration

Shot list with angles, poses, and required deliverables

Wardrobe and prop requirements

Usage rights and licensing information

When everyone knows what’s expected, the shoot runs smoothly and fewer reshoots are needed.

2. Communicate With Your Team Early

From models to makeup artists, every team member should know their schedule and role ahead of time. Send out confirmations at least 48 hours before the shoot. Include:

Call times and location details

Parking and access instructions

What to bring, such as wardrobe or personal items

Any special preparation, like arriving with clean skin or nails

Clear communication reduces delays and builds a professional atmosphere.

3. Respect the Models

Treat models as valued professionals, not props. A positive environment creates better images because models feel comfortable and confident.

Provide water, snacks, and a clean area to change clothing.

Offer constructive direction instead of criticism.

Allow for regular breaks, especially during long sessions.

Use appropriate language and maintain professional boundaries.

When models feel respected, their energy and expressions will elevate the final photos.

4. Direct Poses With Confidence

Most models are skilled at posing, but they still need clear direction.

Explain the emotion or story you want the image to convey.

Demonstrate poses when needed rather than just describing them.

Adjust positioning to highlight the product while keeping the model’s posture natural.

Capture multiple variations to provide options during editing.

5. Manage Time Effectively

Time is money on set. Keep the session on track by:

Setting realistic schedules for each look or setup.

Prioritizing must-have shots early in the day.

Assigning a team member to track progress against the shot list.

Staying flexible in case of unexpected challenges.

6. Review Images During the Shoot

Tether your camera to a laptop or tablet so you can review images as they’re captured. This allows you to:

Catch issues like wardrobe malfunctions or lighting problems immediately.

Get approval on key shots before wrapping.

Avoid surprises during post-production.

7. Follow Up After the Shoot

After the session, send thank-you notes to your team and models. Share preview images when possible and confirm delivery timelines with the client. This builds lasting relationships and increases the likelihood of repeat collaborations.

Pro Tip: Create a Shoot Checklist

A physical checklist keeps you organized and ensures nothing is overlooked, from extra batteries to signed model releases. Preparation reduces stress and protects your investment.
