How to Capture Stunning Motion Blur in Product Photography: A Step-by-Step Guide

When done right, capturing motion blur in product photography can really make your product photos stand out.

This is part three of an 8 part series on motion blur techniques in photography.

Each article focuses on an aspect of motion blur and is linked below in an index. That way you can easily find the information that will help you.

In this article, we will go over capturing motion blur in a step by step guide, to help you easily understand the process.

Let’s get started.

Capturing motion blur in product photos requires planning, precision, and a touch of creativity.

Here’s how you can do it.

1. Setting Up Your Shot

Stabilize Your Camera

  • Use a Tripod: A sturdy tripod keeps your camera steady during long exposures. Make sure it’s on a stable surface and all joints are tight.
  • Remote Shutter Release: To prevent camera shake when pressing the shutter button, use a remote or your camera’s built-in timer.

Lighting Considerations

  • Continuous Lighting: Use LED panels or softboxes to see how light affects your product in real-time.
  • Adjust Light Position: Highlight key features of your product. Backlighting can create striking silhouettes and emphasize motion.
  • Experiment with Light Intensity: If your image is too bright with slow shutter speeds, dim the lights or use ND filters.

Background Setup

  • Choose a Simple Background: Neutral colors or gradients keep the focus on your product.
  • Use Reflective Surfaces: A glossy black or white surface can add sophistication. Reflections enhance motion blur, adding depth to your image.

2. Techniques for Creating Motion Blur

Technique 1: Panning

  • What is Panning? Moving your camera in sync with a moving subject during exposure. This keeps the subject sharp while the background blurs.
  • How to Do It:
    • Set your shutter speed to around 1/30 to 1/60 of a second.
    • Lock focus on your product.
    • As the product moves, smoothly follow its motion with your camera.
    • Match your camera’s movement speed with the product’s speed.

Technique 2: Product Motion

  • What is Product Motion? Instead of moving the camera, you move the product to create a light trail behind it.
  • How to Do It:
    • Place the product on a long strip of tagboard.
    • Set a slow shutter speed (1 to 2 seconds or slower).
    • Lock focus on the ending point of the slide motion.
    • Take a shot so your product is completely in focus.
    • Move the product to where you want the motion to start.
    • During the exposure, smoothly pull the tagboard & make the product slide.
    • Experiment with different speeds and directions.

Technique 3: Zoom Blur

  • What is Zoom Blur? Zooming in or out during a long exposure creates dynamic radial streaks.
  • How to Do It:
    • Use a zoom lens (like 24-70mm or 70-200mm).
    • Set a slow shutter speed (1/10 of a second or slower).
    • Start with the lens zoomed in or out.
    • During the exposure, smoothly zoom in the opposite direction.
    • Experiment with different speeds and directions.

Technique 4: Light Trails and Reflections

  • What are Light Trails? Moving a light source during a long exposure leaves a streak of light.
  • How to Do It:
    • Set up your product in a dark environment.
    • Use a slow shutter speed (1 to 10 seconds).
    • While the shutter is open, move a light source (like an LED strip) around the product.
    • For reflective products, this creates beautiful reflections and adds depth.
