Any small movement or camera shake between frames can ruin the flow, making your animation look jumpy.

• For professional stop motion work, stability and precision are key. I use a Manfrotto tripod for most of my traditional shots. Manfrotto tripods are sturdy, reliable, and offer smooth adjustment capabilities, which are essential for ensuring that your camera stays perfectly stable during long shoots.
• For overhead or flat-lay shots, a C-stand is perfect for holding the camera securely above your setup. You will need an adapter that fits your camera mount, make sure the screw is the proper size and it is rated to hold the weight of your camera.  This type of stabilization is great for top-down animations like those involving flat-lay style scenes.

Pro Tip: If you’re working with a lightweight camera or phone, even minor movements can be exaggerated. Using a remote trigger, or tethering the camera to your computer and controlling it through software, can prevent accidental shaking caused by pressing the shutter button.

Inconsistent lighting between frames can cause flickering, which disrupts the flow of the animation.

Professional Setup: Flat Panel LEDs or Video Lighting

• For professional-quality lighting, I use flat panel LED lights. These panels are lightweight, adjustable, and versatile. I prefer to bounce the light off a white ceiling to create a softer, more natural look without casting direct shadows.
• LED panels like those from Godox or Aputure are ideal for stop motion because they allow for precise control over brightness and color temperature, ensuring that every frame has the same lighting consistency.
• One more highly recommended lighting equipment for stop motion animation setups I’ve seen in a small studio environment is the Flashpoint FV150.  The artist uses 4 lights positioned around their studio – usually bounced off the ceiling to provide soft light.

Pro Tip: Position your lights carefully and avoid standing between the light casts and your set. Even moving slightly near the lights can cast shadows or alter the light’s intensity, so it’s important to return to your shooting position before capturing each frame.

Software for Editing and Animation

Choosing the right software can make your stop motion animation process much easier, from capturing the images to editing the final video.

The right software will help you arrange your frames, adjust timing, and add any effects or sound.

Here’s a look at some options based on experience level.

Beginner Option: Stop Motion Studio

• If you’re new to stop motion, Stop Motion Studio is a great app to get started. It’s available on both mobile devices and desktop and has an intuitive interface that makes it easy to create frame-by-frame animations.
• The app allows you to adjust frame rate, add sound effects, and even includes onion skinning (a feature that overlays the previous frame, so you can align your next shot). It’s an affordable option for beginners.

Whether you’re using toys, clay figures, products or household items, the process is about making small movements and capturing each frame to tell a story.

The best part? You don’t need fancy equipment to get started.

As a product photographer, I create stop motions for my clients’ websites and social media content.

In this article, I’ll walk you through simple tips and tricks to make your first stop motion animation a success.

These practical stop motion animation tips will help you avoid common mistakes and make your animations smoother and more polished.

Let’s get started!

1. Plan Your Story

Every great animation begins with a good story. It doesn’t matter if your film is a few seconds or several minutes long.

Without a plan, you’ll end up moving objects around without purpose, and your animation won’t make sense.

This is where storyboarding comes in. A storyboard is a visual plan for your animation, breaking down the story into scenes.

Even if your animation is short, a storyboard will help you stay organized.

You don’t have to be an artist to make a storyboard.

Just sketch out rough drawings of what happens in each scene.

You can even write down simple bullet points describing the actions.

The goal is to know exactly what you need to shoot before you start.

For example, if you’re animating a toy car, you might have three scenes:

1. The car approaches a hill.
2. The car climbs the hill.
3. The car reaches the top and celebrates.

That’s it! With a storyboard, you can focus on one small movement at a time, which makes the entire process smoother.

2. Use a Stable Camera Setup

In stop motion animation, even the smallest camera shake can ruin your shot.

The camera needs to stay in the exact same position for every frame, or your animation will appear jittery.

That’s why using a stable camera setup is so important.

The easiest way to keep your camera steady is by using a tripod.

If you don’t have one, you can get creative by propping your camera on a stack of books or using Blu Tack to hold it in place.

Just make sure it doesn’t move between shots.

A Pro Tip: use a remote trigger or set your camera’s timer to take photos. This will prevent you from accidentally moving the camera when you press the button. The less you touch your camera, the smoother your animation will be.

Remember, the key to a smooth animation is consistency. Keeping your camera perfectly still is one of the simplest ways to achieve that.

3. Master Manual Camera Settings

To create a polished stop motion animation, you’ll want full control over your camera’s settings.

Automatic settings might seem convenient, but they can cause flickering and inconsistent exposure between frames.

First, make sure your exposure, ISO, and white balance are locked.

This will prevent your camera from adjusting its settings mid-shoot, which can cause your animation to look uneven. Consistency is key here.

Another critical setting to adjust is your focus.

Turn off autofocus.

In stop motion, autofocus can ruin your animation by shifting focus between shots.

Instead, switch to manual focus and set it once at the beginning of the shoot.

This ensures every frame stays sharp and in focus, without any unwanted changes.

If you’re using an entry-level camera or even a smartphone, many of these settings can be adjusted with the right app.

However, if you decide to get serious about stop motion, I highly recommend investing in DragonFrame.

It’s the go-to software for professional stop motion animators and offers incredible control over your animation, from camera settings to frame-by-frame adjustments.

DragonFrame is a bit of an investment, but if you’re serious about mastering stop motion, it’s worth every penny.

4. Control Your Lighting

Lighting can make or break your stop motion animation. Inconsistent lighting can cause flickering between frames, which distracts from the animation itself.

To avoid this, always shoot in a controlled environment with consistent lighting.

The best approach is to use artificial light.

This could be a ring light, a softbox, or even desk lamps—just as long as the light stays the same throughout your shoot.

Avoid relying on natural light, as it changes throughout the day, and any shift in brightness can affect the quality of your animation.

When positioning your lights, aim for even coverage across the entire scene.

Shadows can add unwanted movement or distractions to your frames.

If you need to create a specific mood or effect, adjust the light’s direction or intensity, but keep it consistent once the scene is set.

Another tip is to take a test shot and review it before starting the animation.

Make sure the lighting looks right in your first frame so you don’t waste time fixing it later.

A consistent lighting setup is one of the easiest ways to improve the quality of your stop motion.

5. Shoot at a Higher Frame Rate

The frame rate you choose has a big impact on how smooth your animation looks.

The more frames per second (FPS), the smoother the motion will be.

For beginners, I recommend starting with 12-24 frames per second.

At 12 frames per second, your animation will still be relatively smooth without requiring a huge number of shots.

If working with video, 24 frames per second is a common format.  If you plan to use 12 frame per second as a speed, each frame would last .02 seconds.

If you want a more professional look, aim for 24 frames per second, but keep in mind that this means shooting twice as many frames.

Let’s break it down: if you want a 10-second animation at 12 FPS, you’ll need to take 120 individual photos.

At 24 FPS, that number jumps to 240 photos.

So, while a higher frame rate will give you a smoother result, it also requires a lot more time and effort.

Remember, it’s all about balance.

If you’re just starting out, stick to 12 FPS until you get the hang of it.

Once you feel more comfortable, you can experiment with higher frame rates for a more polished animation.

6. Be Patient—Small Movements Matter

This is one of my best stop motion animation tips for beginners – and one that is so difficult for new animators.

Stop motion animation is all about small, precise movements.

The smaller the movements between each frame, the smoother the final animation will look.

If you rush and make large movements, your animation will appear jumpy and unnatural.

The key here is patience.

For example, if you’re animating a figure walking, move it only a tiny bit with each frame—just a few millimeters at a time.

It might seem tedious, but the results will be worth it. You can even take multiple photos of the same position if you want to slow down certain parts of the animation.

Or, you can tag that position’s frame and extend the length when editing the animation.

It’s also a good idea to review your frames as you go.

This helps you catch mistakes early, like if you accidentally bumped the camera or moved an object too much.

Stopping to check your progress will save you from having to re-shoot entire sections later.

Remember, stop motion takes time. Don’t rush the process.

Focus on small, consistent movements for a smoother and more professional result.

7. Edit Carefully

Once you’ve captured all your frames, it’s time to edit and bring your animation to life.

There are several free and beginner-friendly tools you can use for editing, like Stop Motion Studio or iMovie.

These programs let you arrange your frames in sequence, adjust the frame rate, and even add sound.

However, if you’re serious about stop motion animation, I highly recommend DragonFrame.

This software gives you precise control over each frame and is used by professional animators.

It’s a bit of an investment, but the level of control it offers is unmatched.

During the editing process, check that each frame flows smoothly into the next.

Adjust the timing of certain frames if necessary.

For example, you might want to hold on a particular frame longer to emphasize a moment in your story.

You can also add sound effects, music, and voiceovers to enhance your animation.

Sound plays a big role in how your final piece will be perceived, so don’t overlook this step.

With the right software and a careful eye, you can turn your raw frames into a polished, professional-looking animation.

8. Practice and Experiment

The beauty of stop motion animation is that there are no limits to what you can create.

The more you practice, the better you’ll get, and the more you can experiment with different techniques and materials.

Try using different objects in your animations. Each material will move differently, giving you endless possibilities for storytelling.

You can also experiment with different animation styles, like animating objects frame by frame, or using cutouts for a more stylized look.

Don’t be afraid to push the boundaries.

If something doesn’t work out the first time, it’s all part of the learning process.

The more you experiment, the more you’ll discover your unique style.

And remember, every frame you shoot helps you improve as a stop motion animator.

Origins of Stop Motion Animation

A Timeless Technique

Stop motion animation has its roots deep in the early days of cinema.

Before CGI and advanced visual effects, filmmakers relied on this method to bring inanimate objects to life.

It involves capturing individual frames of a subject in incremental stages of motion.

This is also called frame by frame animation.

When played in succession, these frames create the illusion of movement.

Pioneers in Motion

One of the earliest and most iconic uses of stop motion animation is in the 1902 film, “A Trip to the Moon” by Georges Méliès.

His innovative techniques paved the way for future filmmakers and set the foundation for the art form.

Another landmark is the 1933 classic, “King Kong”, where stop motion brought Kong to life in a way audiences had never seen before.

Cartoons, while not officially stop motion, are another example of this concept.

Walt Disney’s classic shorts and movies were filmed one frame or “cell” at a time.

Creating a stop motion image is both an art and a science.

Photographers begin by setting up their scene, ensuring consistent lighting throughout the shoot.

At my product photograohy studio, the subject is often a client’s product.

The product and it’s action is then moved incrementally between each shot.

For major productions, photographers may capture hundreds, or even thousands, of images.

Most product shorts are comprised of anywhere between 12 and 500 individual images.

Once edited, the images are compiled into a sequence.

This sequence, when played back, gives the illusion of smooth motion.

The Subtle Charm of Cinemagraphs

Cinemagraphs in product photography, on the other hand, are a blend of still images and video.

At a glance, they look like a regular photo, but a portion of the image contains subtle, repeated movement.

It’s this blend of static and dynamic elements that makes cinemagraphs so captivating.

Typically, the photographer takes a video clip to capture motion.

During post-production, certain elements are frozen, while others retain their motion.

I once had a project where the client wanted to change the background after the shoot. I can tell you, painstakingly altering the background of hundreds of frames was quite a challenge. But hey, what’s a little Photoshop challenge for the cause of creativity, right?

Stop motion animated product photos aren’t cheap. They require multiple images that are cleaned, retouched and assembled into the graphic. Some simple animations may only need a couple of photos. More complex ones will need many more.

When my studio delivers stop motion product animations, they will reach you in two formats. One is a GIF file which is a moving image. The other is an MP4 file, which can be uploaded to your social media. Plus it will already be sized for the social media platform(s) you use.

Why spend the money on stop motion product animations?

I could tell you they get more views and likes, but then again, I want product photography clients to hire me to produce them. So why should you believe me?

First, I’m an honest guy who works hard to make sure my clients get my best for their investment.

Second, I’ll tell you exactly how to find out for yourself!

Photos vs. stop motion clips

Today, Instagram is a video sharing app and still one of the most popular image/video social platforms out there. All you need to do is look. I did, and here is what I found …

I enjoy shooting beverage photography. (You can check out my gallery by clicking this link.) So I follow a lot of successful brands as well as those just starting their beverage business.

On Mike’s Hard Lemonade account, (I enjoy their product.) I saw some telling signs that support my earlier claim. Their stop motion animation shares had a much higher viewership than their still images.

Comparative numbers

As an example: One animation received 3,723 views as compared to 387 of a still a day later. Another received 4,148 views as compared to 919 for a standard video. The numbers showed a wide disparity.

Next I decided to check Pepsi. Their stop motion animation graphics pulled numbers like: 19,275 – 15,486 and 17,095 vs. their still photos which pulled a respectable: 7,214 – 6,194 and 4,622.

But how does this play out for smaller companies. A random beverage account that was just starting had 101 views for their animation vs. 49 for their still.

Now these figures were there when I wrote this article. I imagine they have changed and some posts may have been archived. Still, if you want to check out the differents, you can verify the findings by looking at counts between stills and stop motions.

Stop motion product animations pull more eyes to them.

Another thing I noted was the feeds of these brands had far less still shots than stop motions. (Which usually scored even higher than regular commercial style videos.)

My guess is when a post gets 147 likes, and a stop motion gets thousands, the still post gets archived or deleted sooner. This means the stop motions stay around much longer, giving you more value for your spend. A much better ROI.
